LOS ANGELES, CA – You won’t believe your eye when you see Variety the Children’s Charity’s 23rd annual Gold Heart Pin! Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios have partnered with Variety the Children’s Charity to create a pin featuring Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan (Sulley), the beloved characters from “Monsters, Inc.” and the upcoming film, “Monsters University.” Proceeds will benefit Variety programs that serve children who are disabled and disadvantaged around the world.
The collector’s item will be available in more than 1,000 movie theatres and other locations nationwide through June 2013, coinciding with the release of “Monsters University,” coming to, theatres June 21, 2013.
Screaming with laughter and fun, “Monsters University” tells the story of how two mismatched monsters, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, overcame their differences and became the best of friends.
“Two days after he received his very own specially-adaptive bike, Matthew was outside riding and said, ‘Mom, have you ever felt the wind on your face going downhill?’ He had never experienced that.”
8-year-old Matthew was active and social, but because of his cerebral palsy, had never been able to enjoy one of the staples of childhood – riding a bike. A specialized bike for his needs cost $3,500, far more than his single mother of three could afford. Variety the Children’s Charity provided funding for a bike for Matthew so he could exercise, increase his independence and play with his brothers and friends.
The Variety Gold Heart Pin campaign raises about $1.5 million in the U.S. annually to provide assistance to children like Matthew who are disabled and disadvantaged when family income, insurance and the government cannot. Through its mobility program, Variety supplies funding for children with special needs to get walkers, wheelchairs, strollers, specially-designed adaptive bikes and other equipment to increase their independence, confidence and self-reliance. Variety also takes children who are disadvantaged on life-enhancing excursions, and it supports children’s hospitals, funds local camps and boys & girls clubs, and encourages education through scholarships, arts initiatives and literacy programs.
