Variety – the Children’s Charity of Eastern Tennessee was pleased to present five-year-old Carly Teague with her own Rifton adaptive trike at the annual Golf Tournament on May 2nd. Carly was over joyed receiving her hot pink tricycle from Variety. She suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Rett Syndrome that causes problems in the brain function that are responsible for cognitive, sensory, emotional, motor and autonomic function. Just like many other children Variety supports, Carly is affected by muscle weakness and many other physical limitations. Muscle weakness generally results in a lack of physical activity. Her doctor knew she would benefit from receiving a special adaptive trike. Unfortunately, due to the costs associated with these adaptive trikes, and the refusal by insurance providers to pay for the costs, the family was unable to afford the purchase of this trike. Carr Rehab suggested the family apply for funding from Variety. Variety was very happy to step in and assist the family with the purchase and now Carly is able to work on strengthening her muscles and socialization skills outside of the hospital.
Carly’s trike is fitted with many different accessories that will help in her continued development. The trike includes self-leveling reciprocal pedals, a harness and a hand brake which are necessary safety features. The trike also is fitted with a parent rear guide bar which allows Carly’s mom to push and guide her trike when she gets tired. Long-term benefits for Carly will include muscle strengthening, bone and muscle growth, improved eye-hand coordination, cognitive growth, improved self-esteem and social acceptance. With her new trike Carly is now able to be like all the other children her age and go outside to play with her friends in large part due to Variety’s mobility program in Eastern Tennessee.Visit Website
