Charity single honours courageous Western Australia teen September 16, 2013 8:53 PM - Variety The Children’s Charity

Following the national release of her debut EP Fireproof in 2012, Western Australian independent singer/songwriter Katie O’Donnell returns with On the Inside (Tayla’s Song – Butterfly Edition) – an emotionally charged ballad which is set to not only touch hearts, but make a real difference to Aussie kids in need, by raising funds for Variety – the Children’s Charity.

On the Inside (Tayla’s Song – Butterfly Edition) began as a poem, written by WA teen Tayla Hancock, who was just 16 when she lost her battle with cancer. Tayla’s words were brought to life by industry greats Suze DeMarchi (Baby Animals) and Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) to create a candid and beautifully poignant personal narrative of vulnerability and the fragility of life. Katie was privileged to perform Tayla’s song on many occasions, including at a special fundraiser while she was still undergoing treatment and sadly at her funeral.

Inspired by Tayla’s bravery and with the blessing of the Hancock family, Suze and Nuno, Katie penned additional verses and a chorus for On the Inside (Tayla’s Song – Butterfly Edition) to complete Tayla’s story after her passing. The lyrics speak of Tayla’s journey from helplessness to eventual acceptance and her feelings of hope that other people not take life for granted.

In honour of Tayla, part proceeds from the sale of On the Inside (Tayla’s Song – Butterfly Edition) will be donated to Variety – the Children’s Charity. The single is available now for download from iTunes and other online music retailers.

The song also features members of WA’s acclaimed Variety Youth Choir, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2013.
