It was a long but exhilarating two days of laughter, happy tears and some very magic moments at Variety’s 50th annual Show of Hearts Telethon on Global BC last weekend. You showed your hearts and helped us raise over $6.8 million for children in B.C. with special needs.
We packed a lot into our milestone celebration; we reminisced about the people and events that shaped Variety’s illustrious history, and we met some of the supporters who are helping us pave the way for the future. We also met families whose lives have been changed with Variety’s support. Live on the show, there were very special surprises to ensure that despite challenges, the kids we help have a chance to simply enjoy being kids: baby Kamden was amazed at meeting two live owls; Wyatt met his hero Rick Hansen and will get to try adapted sports; sisters Kaelyn and Karissa who were treated to princess makeovers and a family vacation; and Markus, who will be a guest on the set of the iZombie production.
One of the biggest highlights of the Telethon was our presentation of the first Sunshine Family Van to Surrey mom Danielle and her young family. There wasn’t a dry eye in the studio, and we look forward to helping more families in B.C. who need wheelchair accessible vans through this new initiative.
We brought back live entertainment and concert-goers at The Centre loved the shows on Saturday and Sunday; our thanks goes to all the performers for the generous gift of their time and talent.
To our corporate sponsors and Telethon partners – thank you. We simply couldn’t do what we do without your incredible support.
And finally, to all of our volunteers and the people of British Columbia, our biggest and most heartfelt thank you. Your generosity is outstanding, and together, we will make a difference in the lives of thousands of children with special needs.
The Telethon has wrapped but the need doesn’t end. For those who missed the chance to donate during the Telethon, but would like to help kids with special needs, please visit variety.bc.ca to make a contribution.
