VICF – Child Health Campaign – The Variety International Children’s Fund: Addressing issues of health, poverty and development in rural Pestel, Haiti April 30, 2014 4:29 PM - Variety International

2013 was a great year! The Child Health Campaign is already looking ahead. They have expanded their health efforts to include vaccinations.

Health: Reaching the Furthest from the first Child Health Campaigns we have sought to reach the furthest child in the furthest village of Pestel. This has not been an easy task. Some of the children live 3-4 hours one-way off the main road, deep in the mountains. The only way to reach them is to walk, sometimes along very steep ridges. The Child Health Campaign has trained 18 field health workers to provide some basic medications to boost children’s immune function and to kill intestinal parasites. They have been providing Vitamin A and Deworming medications twice annually since 2010. They are so thankful for the generous and consistent financial support of Variety International, The Children’s Charity, which help make this a reality. Because the reality is that through this twice-a-year medication distribution they estimate that they are literally saving about 140 children PER YEAR from dying. This year the field workers began providing immunizations to children (tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, diphtheria) and also to pregnant women and women of childbearing age (tetanus) as neonatal tetanus is an unfortunate and preventable killer.
