Wheels in motion for Variety Bash’s 30 years on the road September 26, 2014 1:19 AM - Variety Bash

Six consecutive State and Territory Bashes converge on Sydney to celebrate 30 years since the first Variety Bash

Australia’s most loved charity motoring event, the Variety Bash, revved up in August to celebrate its 30th Anniversary, with all seven State and Territory Bashes across Australia hitting the road consecutively to unite in Sydney on August 17th for a spectacular parade across the Sydney Harbor Bridge and culminating in an evening of festivities at Moor Park to mark this significant milestone.

The celebration, hosted by Comedian, Vince Sorrenti and TV Host, Karen Ledbury, saw addresses from the Governor General of Australia, His Excellency, the Honorable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), NSW Health Minister, the Honorable Jillian Skinner and Bash founder and Philanthropist, Dick Smith AO.

Each States colorful convoy of outrageously themed vintage and classic vehicles driven by fancy dressed participants travelled a different route, with the more than 600 cars and 1850 fancy dressed drivers covering a combined 15,000 miles and visiting 100 regional and rural towns on route. Bash teams stop at local schools to visit the kids, the smallest having only 5 students.

While the Bash is all about the kids, the event is welcomed by the small and regional communities as one of their highlights of the year.

The welcoming town of Tilpa has a population of just four permanent residents but managed to serve 1,400 meals in a 48 hour period to Bashers from three different states that each passed through the town.

The Variety Bash is a celebration of 12 months fundraising by Bash Teams and since its inception has raised more than $200 million for Australian children while injecting a further $3 million into regional and rural communities each year. The 2014 National Bash added a further $7.7 million net for Variety in Australia to help children who are sick, disadvantaged or live with special needs.
