Variety of Pittsburgh

Variety – the Children’s Charity of Pittsburgh provided 444 children with disabilities in Pennsylvania and West Virginia an adaptive bike, an adaptive stroller, or a communication device this past year – giving them freedom, mobility, and a voice. Each piece of equipment was individually customized to meet their needs, so they could flourish.

In particular, Austin, age 20 received his very own communication device through Variety’s “My Voice” Program, which allowed Austin to share his wants, needs, and feelings at all times.

Austin’s father, Clark told us how this new device would impact his son, “This will improve Austin’s everyday life. He will be able to communicate his needs to his family and friends without it being a guessing game, which causes frustration at times. It will also help in emergencies, as he can tell us if he is sick, or hurt, or if someone else was. He can tell us his jokes and express his great sense of humor. This device will open up a whole new world for Austin. He has never had a voice to communicate, this will help to make his dreams come true”.

Shortly after receiving his device, Austin, Clark, and Austin’s two brothers attended Variety’s Gala at Heinz Field to share with everyone their story, and for Austin to demonstrate how he can now communicate with his device.

Variety (Tent 1) strives to enable children with disabilities, like Austin, to live life to the fullest, and to be a kid first and foremost throughout 50 counties in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
